Adapted from; https://www.ehow.com/how_8670740_make-las-muertos-skulls-molds.html

Makes 8-10 tennis ball sized sugar skulls

Ingredients:

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Spoon
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 tea spn. Meringue powder
  • 2 tsp. Water
  • Cardboard
  • Icing
  • Icing bag (plastic bag)
  • Small hard candies

Steps:

  1. Mix dry ingredients in a bowl
  2. Sprinkle water onto sugar until it feels like moist sand
  3. Scoop out a tennis ball sized clump and shape into a skull (First, form it into a tight ball by cupping your hands around it. Then, narrow out the bottom of the ball to make the chin. Finally, make slight indentations into the top of the skull in the front with your fingertip to represent the eye sockets. As long as you’ve packed the sugar mix tightly enough when rolling it into the original ball, it will hold. Place it on the cardboard.)
  4. Repeat to this process to make more skulls
  5. Let dry for 24 hours
  6. Decorate using icing and hard candies
  7. Let set for 24 hours
  8. Enjoy!
