On August 17, 2020 at 6:40 a.m. lightning struck in Napa and Sonoma Counties, this quickly sparked fires that are now known as the LNU Lightning Complex Fires. They got their names from the the local unit of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. They began to burn as multiple fires, but eventually merged into 3 primary fires, and headed towards Lake Solano and Yolo counties. As of Saturday, September 5th the fires had burned 375,209 acres, 1,491 structures have been hit, and 91 percent of the fire is currently contained. Sadly this fire has caused 5 deaths, and 4 people have been injured. For example, a family of 3 were all killed when the flames came through their home in Napa County. Firefighters and locals are working extremely hard to contain these fires. Due to the smoke from the LNU fires, the air quality in Davis is not so great sometimes, when the wind blows the smoke in our direction. So, please check local air quality indexes before you go outside for a long period of time.
